Duracell 852-1807 1,800 Watt Five Outlet Rechargeable Power Source Review

Duracell 852-1807 1,800 Watt Five Outlet Rechargeable Power Source
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

UPDATE: After a few months sitting in the corner being charged, I tried it out today. Apparently there's at least one bad cell; a 600w load exhausts the batteries in about 45 seconds. So I revise my rating to ``piece of junk,'' niche or no niche. It needs a much better quality control on the batteries.
ORIGINAL Post:Pros : about three times the run times of a comparable capacity UPS, based on battery capacity (3 x 17AH, vs typical 2 x 9AH in a 1500VA UPS). Maybe nice to have around to switch to when a regular UPS runs down in a long power outage. I got mine for $180, which would be a good deal in the UPS market. The current $380 would be too high for me.
Cons : a lot of cons. It's hyped as if it's going to help out in the gas generator alternative market, but has nowhere near the capacity you'd need in terms or runtimes. It could run a sump pump for an hour maybe (one cycle of my 1/2hp sump pump runs it down to 80% of charge, so 5 cycles would run it out completely), which isn't going to help much. For all this stuff, like refrigerator and so forth, you just need a gas generator.
The transfer time (80ms) is too slow for a computer when the power goes out. A UPS is ten times faster. No power conditioning.
Really heavy. A woman is not going to like dealing with it. Handles are convenient for the weight though. A Honda EU2000i 2000w gas generator weighs the same.
There's no powered-off charge-the-battery-anyway mode, and it consumes 10w when plugged in. Can only be powered off when not plugged in, so you'd have to establish a routine to keep the battery charged if it's not in regular use.
So perhaps its niche is as a backup UPS when the power has been off too long for the regular UPS. Plug the computer into this, then. When the power comes back, charge it back up and put it back in the closet.
It's a nice product, just one with no obvious use.
Get a gas generator for the sump pump and the refrigerator.

This is easily one of the best battery chargers around for consumer trucks and autos. It automatically checks the condition and type of battery and adjusts the charging cycle accordingly. These are very well made; a quality case and good clamps and cables. They LED displays are eimple to interpret (just read the instructions!). It's also gret thtat it can charge such a range of battery types from Gel Cells to standard Lead Acid. Considering it's power the case is not very large and you can easily store this in a closet or average shop shelf.

Black & Decker SS50B Storm Station With 50 Watt Power Inverter LED Flashlight And Digital AM/FM NOAA Weather Radio Review

Black and Decker SS50B Storm Station With 50 Watt Power Inverter LED Flashlight And Digital AM/FM NOAA Weather Radio
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I got the Storm Station as a gift. After plugging it in to charge it for 24 hours (as recommended by the manual) I wanted to test it out. The flashlight worked fine. Nothing else worked at all. When I tried to turn on the radio or LED lights on the unit, they went on for about a second and then the whole unit died. I called Black and Decker customer service and talked to a pleasant, but unhelpful, rep who had no suggestions other than to return it. He indicated that this is not an unusual problem for these units.
I really liked the features on this unit - AC power inverter, USB plug, hand crank, etc. - so I decided to return it for a new one. Amazon's return process was awesome, unfortunately the replacement unit had the exact same problem as the first. In this case, it's two strikes and you're out so I'm giving up on the Storm Station and will find a replacement that will actually work (which is a desirable quality for an item you may need to rely on in an emergency!).

Sunforce 50048 60-Watt Solar Charging Kit Review

Sunforce 50048 60-Watt Solar Charging Kit
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
*Update* 6-2010, while my original panels are still running strong so long as I hose them down once a month, I've noticed that the PVC pipe provided to hold them in place has become brittle with sun exposure, hence I would now in 20/20 hindsight recommend a coat of Krylon Fusion Dover White Plastic Satin Spray Paint on the PVC parts to prevent UV cracking later in life. I do not think the Krylon Fusion product was available when I first setup my first panels but UV cracking of the support structure could cause panel damage in years 2 and 3.
Meanwhile Amazon got their hands on some obsolete & discontinued Sharp panels (12.5% efficiency vs the new 13.1% efficiency) - if you are serious about needing lots of solar power in a small space, this is a big kit - you can view it here: Sunforce 39126 246-Watt High-Efficiency Polycrystalline Solar Power Kit
My only concern about the kit is that due to the new panels being higher efficiency means it will be difficult to match panels if you find you still need more power later on. The other con on that system is it's price -- $1300+ but you get the wattage, along with a cheap charge controller and inverter, both of which could be upgraded for better system performance. It's just another solar system to consider in the $5/watt or less pricepoint for DIYers.
Update 9-18-2008 - Still going strong. I am very pleased with the summer power output of these panels. I wash them with a hose 1x/mo to keep the output current up. Measured before washing and after washing the panel efficiency is clearly a factor of how much dirt is on them. No problems long term on a roof though!
Update 2-20-2008 - goes with graph "photograph" #3 above - pink line is power and blue line is amps from the panel x 10 to share the graph. The X axis is panel voltage. Data was acquired using an Agilent dummy load with programmable voltage in 1V steps from 1V to 22V (open circuit voltage on the panel) on a partially cloudy day in winter sun. Expectations are for 2-3 times performace in summer sun provided the panels don't get too hot. These are on my house roof laying flat on a 3/12 pitch facing due south which is suboptimal but easy for me to do. Be sure to read the photo notes. Sorry about the colors excel defaulted to!
This is a MPPT chart (maximum power point tracking) - you can see that the panels are optimized for charging a 12V wet cell right out of the box. Charge current turns on when battery voltage drops down to 13.0 VDC and turns off at 14.2 VDC with the supplied charge controller in the kit.
The only other interesting fact in 2 months is to keep your panels clean. My maximum current was 5.0 A on a cold morning with bright sun until it rained hard and washed the panels clean. The current went up to 7.0 A maximum right after the rainstorm. Below is the original review - these panels have been running constant for 2 months now into 3 parallel deep cycle marine cells (315 AH) connected to the prosine inverter below to drain the energy made.
When reading the power/current chart you should keep in mind the amps have been multiplied by 10 so they use the same Y axis (so 20A on the chart corresponds to 2.0 A panel current) Watts are actual volts*amps. This was taken in the winter with partial clouds - expectations are for a X3 improvement during summertime but its still february and I'm in the northern hemisphere so we'll have to wait and see. Basically an MPPT charger won't gain but a few watts with this panel so it's not a good investment unless you already have one laying around.
(Begin original review after buying panels)
I never seem to be overwhelmed by the latest shipment of product from China, but this one seems to show some promise and shows signs of good cost engineering and a complete design that can be set up quickly by one person with very little effort. I'd give it 5 stars if it were well packed, but my purchase turned into a shipping fiasco.
Most ALL solar installations are rated in $/watt much like new homes are rated in $/sq ft. We'll get to the sq ft bit later. Here you are getting 60W for 320 dollars or about 5.33 $/watt. Compared to a similar wattage panel, the BP solar 365U rated at 65W and priced (street) at 399 or 6.13 $/watt the amazon package seems to be a good deal when you consider it comes complete less battery (we'll hit that one later too)
In fact, the amazon package deal includes a xantrex 175 watt inverter with a .15A "idle" current designed for solar systems where current consumption must be minimized. It even includes a simple diode/switch "charge regulator" with 2 leds to indicate panel voltage and battery is full but lacks the ability to tell it what type of battery you are using (full is defined at 14.2 volts give or take so it's for wet/flooded cells). Neither of these are big buck items, but they do set you up for a complete small scale solar kit minus the battery out of the box, which is impressive.
Oh yes, the battery. I also ordered the duracell 480W inverter+28AH battery with this panel so I'd have a battery. Also made by Xantrex, it's a nice piece to complete the system. I made the mistake of ordering it with the solar panels (read on)
So how does China produce a complete kit for a lower $/watt price than professional solar companies like BP solar, GE, Kyocera, etc? Well - it's the sq ft part we forgot about for a while. This uses 4 panels @ 15W each to get up to 60 watts with a simple parallel adapter included in the kit. The BP solar is one panel about the size of 1 of these 15W panels, or put another way, is 1/4 the sq footage. So if you are planning on covering your roof with these, think again because you'd need a really big house and have lots of 7A charge diodes and 175W inverters kicking around when you are done. The reason for the 4:1 size difference is the China panels are made using a silicon deposition on glass technique with a very thin film and correspondingly thin output, while other manufacturers use a silicon wafer production method that is roughly 4x more efficient in area, and somewhat more expensive as a result.
Ok - now onto packaging. We need to get this from China to Amazon and finally to the consumer. On the first attempt FEDX carefully placed my fragile glass solar panels on the concrete then put 2ea 60lb batteries on top of them, cracking the glass on all 4 panels. After returning that to amazon, we tried again, this time without the batteries and shipping the system by itself. FEDX again noted shipment damage which wrecked 1 of the 4 panels, but running on 3/4 panels it does work, just not with full output. Amazon has given up because they will only ship and ruin something twice instead of making fedx pay up for piling 120 lbs of batteries on top of the glass panels and poking through the box & styrofoam the second time so I am still in negotiation with them about the shipment, however the product does deserve mention while I have it.
PERFORMANCE:
The design is actually quite well done. You can make (with 4 panels) a 12V (actually 15V) x 4A system, or a 30V x 2A or a 60V x 1A configuration depending on your power inverter and battery collection. For me, this will always be tied into a 12VDC bus so it is fine as shipped, but the flexibility is there if you have other voltages in use. There is no skimping on wire with 16 foot cords on each panel which helps to minimize power lost in the wire since each panel has its own cordset going to the combiner, after which runs are kept short. On a cloudy day I was able to get 2 amps from 3 panels (30 W) - in full sun it peaked at 5.91A with 3 panels, so the Chinese manufacturing has under-rated their output as 90W from a 1/4 dead 60W panel in winter sun is doing very good - I'd like to know how it performs in the summer!
As for mounting, a very clever system was designed to support the panels out of 1" PVC tubing with elbows and T's - all of this is assembled with a singular bolt/wingnut style and the pipes have slots milled into them to ensure that the panels will line up one way or another without breaking after you get them. It has a prop-up leg system for use on the ground or can lay flat if placed on a roof that is already angled towards the sun. There isn't a provision for connecting multiple systems together, however you could make one out of sprinkler pipes you probably have.
All this really needs to be a well designed solar kit is 1) better packaging and 2) a battery. Even with 25% of my panels broken and removed from the system, it still managed to charge a car battery in under 1 cloudy winter day.
I'm impressed with the product, however disappointed with the shipper. I've also run up against Amazon's policy of two strikes and they are out meaning they won't negotiate for repair or replacement as the shipper on my behalf. I can return it alltogether or pay 100% for 75% of a system so it's probably going back tomorrow (monday) - but my testing this weekend has shown that the product warrants consideration for people who
A) Need to keep their starting batteries charged year round (2nd cars, generators, etc) outside where AC power is not convenient.
B) People lacking A/C power somewhere and would like to run a small refrigerator (purchase a Xantrex Technologies Prosine 1,000 to 1,500-Watt Power Inverter #1000 TRUE SINEWAVE power inverter to run any motor load without damage) - for 12V refrigeration needs its best to AVOID both inverters and peltier...Read more›

I say limited review due to the fact I have not had to use this generator as of yet and cannot rate its performance. I bought it due to increased storm outages but have been lucky enough not to have to use a generator yet and is only a matter of time when I do? But I can say this, its a good buy to me for the fact it is a compact unit and even though its small it puts out more watts than those huge units which are mostly all fuel tank and with a reasonable price for its output rating which I beleave was 3,700 watts max. which you the home owner would need to add up the total crucial watts you would need. One can always use an auxillary fuel tank if needed and I would say this unit is just as tough as the big ones without the bulk!!!

Our house has two sump pumps in our finished basement. I purchased the Powersource 1800 to be a backup power supply during a loss of electricty. I chose this after considering a DC powered back up sump pump. The only advantage the DC powered pump had was that it would have been a complete spare pump should one of the main pumps fail. With the Powersource 1800 backup I have backup power not only for the sump pump, but also a power source to power radios, computers, phone, small electric heater, etc. in case of an power outage emergency. There was no mess to install, since you just plug it in. The battery is rated to last as long as the DC battery I was considering so I don't expect that to be an issue.

Blue Max GEN 4000 4,000 Watt 6.5 HP OHV Gas Powered Generator Review

Blue Max GEN 4000 4,000 Watt 6.5 HP OHV Gas Powered Generator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First off, it's really 2800-3000 watts continuous. Jaingdong model JD3000. It uses a Jaingdong JF200 6.5 hp motor which is an excellent clone of the Honda OHV engine (licensed from Honda). It is smooth, quiet, and best of all pretty fuel efficient for a gasoline powered generator. The generator is brushless and therefore really has nothing to wear out other than bearings.
That's the good stuff...
Unfortunately, the Chinese pedigree does show in a few places. The fuel gauge never worked on mine. The electrical components (circuit breaker, meter, etc) seem kind of crude, but have held up OK in use so far.
I've owned this generator for almost two years now and it probably has about 40 hours of runtime. It had no trouble keeping us going during several power outages, the longest of which was about 30 hours. It ran an oil furnace, refrigerator, TV/DVD Player, and a few lights with no problem. The output voltage and frequency does not sag under load. I feel it is sized just about right for the load we place on it. A bigger generator would simply use more fuel.
One tip that makes the generator much easier to start. Always turn off the fuel petcock and remove the drain plug from the carburetor to drain out the old fuel. Replace plug and turn fuel petcock back on. Wait 30 seconds, flip on the choke, and it will start easily, even when it's quite cold outside. Fresh gas does help a lot too.
Overall, I think this is the best emergency generator value on the market. I paid $299 from Homier, and thought that was an outstanding price. I see they have it on sale for $219 right now. It's an outright steal for that price!
No matter what brand of generator you buy, if you have it shipped via UPS, or whatever, there is a chance it will have been handled very poorly. Shipping companies folks don't like handling heavy boxes and they tend to slam them around, roll them off the end of loading docks, etc. The bottom of the support frame was bent on mine, but was easily straightened. I would suggest planning to be at home when the generator is delivered, and if at all possible open the box before the driver leaves to document any possible damage.

Average Reviews:

I received this generator via UPS today (I feel sorry for the UPS driver, it's heavy.)
I opened it and it was double-boxed (good start) and after opening box #2, out came my new generator. Keep in mind that this unit is a 2800 Watt generator with a 4000 watt max output - plenty to power most small homes' fridge, a few lights and a TV, but not your dryer or electric stove.
I filled the oil on the engine (lots of warning stickers about this) and put a gallon of gas in the tank. I turned on the gas petcock, flipped on the choke and pulled the starter - 3 pulls and it started and ran for smoothly for about an hour (until I shut it off.) I plugged several things into it while it was running (the voltage meter on it read a constant 110V) and everything seemed to run fine without the generator even showing a load - even my 2HP table saw motor didn't pull too much when starting.
This looks like typical Chinese-built hardware but it also appears to be well-made (especially for the money.) There's a pop-out filter in the fuel tank (a nice extra) and an accessory pack that includes two 110v plugs, a 220v 3-prong plug and a spark plug wrench. My manual and accessory pack were stuffed up under the gas tank and could have been easily overlooked.
The unit is fairly quiet (for a generator) and is tolerable for outside use. I borrowed a friend's US-made generator and it was much louder than this one is. With my home's door shut and it running just outside, you can't hear it running.
Unless you're equipped with a very strong back, I don't recommend you pick this up by yourself. You would do well to either have a good dolly or a wheel setup to move this around. I am going to use a dolly as I don't want it to be too easy to steal when I use it outside my home.
One last thought: typically you get what you pay for. This is a low-cost generator. I don't expect from it what I might expect from a US-made unit that costs twice as much. But I will say that with good maintenance, I expect it to last for several years. I gave it four stars instead of five since, while it's a good value, it's not built with the fit and finish of it's American competition.

I purchased this Generator to power my freezer and fridge in case of a power outage and it showed up 2 days later, undamaged. I have it wired to a transfer switch that will power my whole house. The wattage is split between the two 120 legs, so you cannot pull the true 30 amps from just one 120 circuit. In my case (220) it works fine. Starts on the first pull, which is surprising for such an inexpensive unit. The output voltage was 121vAC on both legs. The frequency was a bit high at 62hz but I'm sure that can be adjusted by slightly lowering the RPM's. The 220 receptacle is a L14-30 and is typical for a 30 amp 220 genset. This genset will do exactly what I need it to do and so far has performed flawlessly.

The generator arrived with the plastic air cleaner cover severely cracked. This seemed to be due to a somewhat flimsy/unprotected part, but primarily rough shipping. It is unlikely to get damaged during normal use. Anyway, a quick call to Amazon directed me to the manufacturer. The manufacturer Parts Dept offered to send me a replacement for free, and two weeks later it arrived. Fortunately, it was pretty easy to install, because the parts diagram in the owner manual is like a bad copy of a fax, and doesn't depict the air cleaner assembly anyway.
I hooked it up to an LPG tank and followed the instructions for a cold start in the manual, although the language was somewhat confusing (e.g. it took me a while to figure out that the "resistance air valve handle" referred to the choke.) After pulling the start handle multiple times, the best I could do was get it to run for maybe a second. Thinking I might have "flooded" the engine, I endeavored to remove the spark plug (the location of which is nowhere to be found in the user manual, although not hard to find if you are even remotely familiar with small engines,) where I discovered that the plastic plug cap was broken, although the electrical connection seemed to be fine. Using the included spark plug wrench was an adventure, because it requires considerable maneuvering to get it into the small space above the spark plug. The wrench handle was also too short to provide sufficient torque to unscrew the plug, so I resorted to using a long screwdriver through the wrench hole. That worked, but the thing still didn't start.
The next morning I tried again, but this time without going through the cold-start priming procedure, and it started immediately. It has been fine ever since. I tried out a few tools and lights as a load, and they all worked fine. The thing is quite noisy, but that was no surprise.
So, here's my summary:
The BAD:
1. Some parts flimsy
2. Owner's manual incomplete, confusing in places
3. Noisy
The GOOD:
1. Friendly, no-hassle customer service
2. It works, once you figure it out
3. Owner's manual and customer service info available online
4. One heck of a bargain- all it takes is avoiding having the freezer thaw out during one power outage to make it worthwhile
5. Doesn't stink like gas or diesel-powered generators
6. Basic tools included
The NEUTRAL:
1. It really needs wheels if you want to move it easily. I bought a cheap furniture dolly to wheel it around.
2. It would be nice if they had a way of securing an LPG tank to the unit away from the engine heat (on the generator side, maybe)
3. Requires small funnel with flexible and/or long spout to fill oil.

Powerful Engine with Oversized Muffler for Quiet OperationThe PG30P11 features a powerful, seven horsepower, 208-cc, four-stroke, propane-powered OHV engine that is capable of producing 3,000 continuous watts and 3,500 maximum watts. Its pull recoil makes for easy, reliable starts every time. And with a quick-connect coupler, it hooks up easily to any gas grill's propane tank (not included).
Eco-friendly, this generator uses only 1-1/2 pounds of gas per hour under a 50-percent load, meaning you can enjoy your appliances for hours on end without worrying about your carbon footprint.
The engine isn't just powerful, it's also quiet. Thanks to its oversized muffler, the generator produces sound at just 65 decibels during operation, making it an ideal choice for camping.
Alternator Technology Safely Delivers Electricity to Your AppliancesOne of the most innovative features of the PG30P11 is its ETQ Clean Sine Alternator Technology that ensures low total harmonic distortion (THD). THD is a measure of the quality of the electricity produced by a generator, and THD above six percent can damage electronics and other components over time. With THD of less than five percent, the PG30P11 ensures high-quality, safe delivery of electricity from the generator to your electrical components.
With low THD, this generator is computer-friendly, meaning it's completely safe to use with laptops, printers, desktop computers, and more. The PG30P11 will give you peace of mind knowing that your computer hardware is completely safe from power surges and bad-quality electricity.

I bought this generator for power outages and it works well for light use. I really like the light weight. It can be moved around easily. It's good on gas too. I like the charging cables that come with it for charging batteries, they plug right in the front panel. It also has a fuel guage built into the fuel tank. I found the drain on the carb very convenient for storage. The air filter has easy access wing nuts for easy cleaning. The rubber feet on the bottom keep it from "walking" across the floor when running. The only thing I didn't care for was the light on the front panel that indicates there is 120 volt power present, it is very dim, making it hard to see in the daylight, but I can live with that. I bought a second one just to have two around. If you're looking for a small generator, this is a winner!

The generator was received in good condition with fast delivery. The unit started on the second pull, however the idle seemed slow. When hooked to the trailer it would not run the converter and the micro wave together. Contacted Champion and was connected with problem solver / technician Paul.He took me completely through the generator, one section at a time, checking and confirming that there was not a problem. We concluded the problem to be slow rpms. He advised me as to how to correct the problem and set the unit at the right rpm. Paul did a great job and has a good knowledge of his product.. Great little generator.

Blue Max GEN 1250 1250-Watt 2 HP 2-Cycle Gas-Powered Generator Review

Blue Max GEN 1250 1250-Watt 2 HP 2-Cycle Gas-Powered Generator

I've only taken this thing tent camping once (in Oct 2007), but it did work to my expectations. Make no mistake, it is NOTHING FANCY. But considering you could buy about SEVEN of these puppies for the same price as ONE Honda EU1000i, I thought I would give it a shot. So far, I'm pleased.
My least favorite thing about it is that you've got to pre-mix the oil into the gasoline, like you do with some lawnmowers. The special "two-stroke" oil comes in a little bottle, and you pour a small amount (read directions) into the gasoline canister before filling the generator's tank with the mixture. The oil itself is not expensive, but they don't sell it just anywhere; you gotta go to a decent hardware store (i.e. I couldn't find it at Target, but I did find it at Lowe's). So far, this is the only real drawback I experienced; and frankly, it's not that bad.
The unit weighs about 40 lbs. That puts it in the lightest class of generator that I could find. There may be a couple out there that are slightly lighter - but not by more than a few pounds.
Starting up the unit requires about five steps done in order. For some people, 5 steps is about 3 or 4 steps too many, so if you're not mechanically inclined, I'd keep the instructions handy (page 9) until its operation becomes second nature to you. Again, it's really not that bad.
We ran it for about 1.5 tanks of gas, occasionally stopping and restarting when we left the camp site for a bit. Usually, it started on about the 3rd pull. One time it got fussy and I had to pull it about 7-8 times, but that was just one of the starts.
As for the noise, it's not too bad either. It's just slightly louder than the EU1000i, and you could buy a truckload of earplugs with the $650 you'll save. Of course, instead of earplugs, I just bought one of those orange utility extension cords and placed the generator off to the side of my camp site (about 20 feet away). The noise was barely noticable, and certainly didn't hinder a normal conversation.
In short, this is a decent product for the amazingly cheap price tag, and it opened up so many new options for our campsite. If it craps out on me, I'll be sure to update my review to let y'all know!
UPDATE #1 (May 2008): Sad to report that this item was stolen from my toolshed. While I was pretty ticked off about it, I've got to laugh just a little. If I had I bought the much more expensive model (which I almost did), I'd be in tears right now. As it is, I just decided to buy another one of these. That, and to put a better lock on my shed.
UPDATE #2: Received my new "replacement" generator, and... it was defective. A sizable dent in the casing that houses the spindle, which prevents the spindle from moving (thereby preventing the unit from staeting). I guess this is the risk of buying the less expensive model. My recommendation to you: make a full visual inspection of your new unit BEFORE you fill 'er up with gas. You cannot ship a generator that has already been fueled - even if you empty the tank.
UPDATE #3 (June 2008): Why did Amazon raise the price of this item?? When I bought it, it was about $115, and it looks like they pushed it up to $145 - no small increase. My original review was titled "Decent product for the price," but now that I've experienced a did, AND they price went up, I've changed the title to what you now see above. I should also note that there are 2 other generators for sale on Amazon in the same weight class which used to be slightly more expensive than this one, but which are now slightly cheaper. I don't remember the brand, but they look almost like this one, except one is green and the other is yellow. Do a search for "camping generators" and all three come up.
